Creating A User Experience That Drives Results

The user experience (UA) of a website is one of the most important factors, if not the top factor, that will determine the success of your website. I know that seems like a comprehensive statement, and it's intended to be so. The UA of a website combines everything, from loading time to content. It determines if the visitors can find the product or information they are seeking promptly and easily. It determines if they can navigate the site without having to go through numerous pages to find something or if they have to wait for a large image to load.

There is a good chance that you are not the only one selling a product or service. Your hard-earned visitor will do a quick Google search to find a website that is easier to use. I couldn't tell you how many times I've heard people say that they immediately left a site because they had to zoom in on a mobile device or couldn't immediately find what they were seeking.

Your online website builder does not automatically create a good user experience. I'll also go out on a limb and say that your average small budget website designer doesn't take UA into account. It requires an essential thing when integrating the UA into a website: time. Unless the $200-$1,000 website provider gives hours of time for free, I'm willing to bet the provider downloads a template and throws in some images.

The user experience is a process of walking through the visitor's journey. To create a results-driven user experience, you need to think about your images, load times, content, menu structure, call-to-actions, and user devices.

Start with these simple best practices to create a better user experience:

  • Write content that is engaging and well-optimized for SEO.
  • Implement a menu structure that navigates the visitor to your products and services with no more than two clicks or a few as possible.
  • Use images that fit the designated area and optimzie them for load-time.
  • Don't over use images.
  • Always consider what the site looks like on a smartphone and tablet.
  • Implement a quality control phase to ensure the user experience is flawless.
  • Execute a well-planned launch.

Make sure you don't rush the creation of your website. Remember, a website is a direct representation of you and your business.
