Are solutions like Wix, WordPress, and Squarespace a good idea for a professional website?

So your business needs a new website, and you've seen these amazing commercials that advertise fast and easy professional sites. At this point, your mouth is watering and chomping at the bit to get your new website launched in minutes. Okay, maybe it's an exaggeration, but you're still excited about the possibilities and the thousands of dollars you will save by not paying a professional website design company.

Let's pause for a second. Don't you remember all the times you heard that nothing is free? Maybe you have also heard the phrase "You get what you pay for" as your parents were teaching you a lesson about money. Let's come back to this in a bit.

Many companies use services like a Wix or Squarespace to get a website created fast and for a fraction of the regular cost. These types of DIY services allow non-website developers the opportunity to make a professional looking website. The keyword here is "opportunity."

Some businesses may have the time and creativity to pull off a good-looking site using the DIY tools, but most do not. I'm not saying that you are not creative, but you need to take several things into consideration that you may not be aware of when using a fast website solution. Image optimization, SEO best practices, calls-to-action, content creation, and user experience are just a few. The user experience of a website can easily be an article in itself. Maybe we will add one in the coming days.

Time seems to be a significant factor when using a DIY service. You will have a bit of a learning curve when using the tools. And face it; you don't care to spend the time learning. It's amazing how many people start these projects and never complete them or call guys like me to help. At this point, you are now spending more money, and you've wasted a good amount of your time.

We all have heard of WordPress. Many companies ask for it because it's a buzzword. It's also "free" to use, but that's before you buy your plugins and endless amounts of maintenance. Guess what? It's no longer free. It's also not the most user-friendly solution. Many companies rush to it because of it has an endless number of third-party plugins that can do about anything you need for a website. So how do they work and get updated, and what happens if one breaks due to the constant updates to WordPress? How do you change a custom theme? Wait, custom theme? Yes, now it's going to cost you again. At the end of the day, you have spent more on WordPress than you would have ever thought.

Don't get me wrong, many website design companies use WordPress, and that is the system that they have invested their knowledge in, but we are not fans. It has its place for some projects, but we use other solutions that are more customized for our clients. It's a matter of preference, and we also get a significant number of businesses asking us to fix their WordPress sites. Our response is to get rid of it. Again, it's a matter of opinion. We are not WordPress haters, just not fans.

It's amazing how many companies that contact us have been sitting on a half-finished website and need some help. Just remember: You get what you pay for, and nothing is free.
